Swingweight Explained: Why Two Identical Clubs Feel Different
Two clubs can weigh exactly the same on a scale and feel completely different in your hands. That difference is swingweight — a measure of how the club's weight is distributed around a fixed balance point, not how much it weighs. It is one of the most useful numbers on the bench and one of the least explained to golfers.

What the letters and numbers mean
Swingweight is expressed on a lettered scale — C8, D0, D2, D4 — measured on a swingweight scale with a fulcrum 14 inches from the butt end. Each letter step is divided into ten points, so D0 to D1 is one point and C9 to D1 is two points. Most men's stock irons come in around D0 to D2; women's clubs often sit in the C-range; drivers frequently land D2 to D4.

The half-inch figure is the one that surprises people. Extending a club half an inch does not just make it longer — it makes it feel roughly three points heavier. That is why a club that has been lengthened without rebalancing often feels clumsy, and why a shortened club feels unusually light and hard to sense.
Why matching a set matters
In a well-built set, each iron gets progressively heavier in static weight as it gets shorter, but swingweight stays nearly constant. That constancy is what lets one swing tempo work across the set. When swingweights scatter — a D4 6-iron next to a C9 7-iron — the golfer unconsciously changes tempo from club to club, and strike consistency suffers even though nothing looks wrong.
Scatter shows up most often after piecemeal work: one club reshafted with a different shaft, one regripped with a heavier midsize, one bent and re-tipped over the years. A full-bag audit measuring swingweight across the set almost always finds a spread, and the spread is usually larger than the owner expected.
Higher or lower — which suits you?
- Higher swingweight (D3+): more head awareness, helps players who lose the clubhead or swing too quickly, can feel laboured for slower tempos
- Lower swingweight (C7–D0): easier to accelerate, favours quick tempos and lighter builds, can feel vague and encourage handsy delivery
- Consistency across the set matters more than the absolute number for nearly every golfer
Preference is real here, and it is not correlated tightly to strength. Strong players sometimes prefer light heads; slower swingers sometimes need more head feel to time the release. This is exactly the kind of thing worth testing rather than assuming.
Swingweight vs MOI matching
Swingweight uses a fixed 14-inch fulcrum, which is a simplification — it does not perfectly account for how a longer club resists rotation. MOI matching measures the club's true moment of inertia about the grip and matches that instead. It is a more complete model, and it typically results in slightly heavier heads in the short irons than swingweight matching does.
For most golfers, a properly swingweight-matched set is a big improvement over an unmatched one, and the difference between swingweight matching and MOI matching is a refinement. Fix the scatter first.
How we adjust it
- Tip weights or tungsten powder inside the shaft tip to raise swingweight
- Head weight ports where the model provides them
- Lead tape on the head as a temporary, testable change before a permanent build
- Grip weight selection to lower swingweight without touching the head
- Length changes — always followed by a re-measure, never assumed
Lead tape gets a bad reputation, but it is the honest way to test a change. Two points of tape on the sole for a week of rounds tells you more than any theory. If it works, we build it in permanently and record it on your spec sheet.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a higher swingweight better for distance?
- Not inherently. A heavier head can add mass at impact but usually costs some clubhead speed. The version that produces the best strike quality for your tempo wins, and that varies by player.
- Does regripping change swingweight?
- Yes. Grip weight sits behind the balance point, so a heavier grip lowers swingweight by roughly one point per 4–5 grams. Switching to a heavy midsize grip can take two to three points out of a club.
- How much swingweight variation is acceptable in a set?
- We aim to hold a set within about one point. Beyond two points of spread, most golfers can feel the inconsistency between adjacent clubs even if they cannot name it.
