Putter Fitting: Why Length and Lie Matter More Than the Head Shape
Putter fitting gets treated as a taste question — blade or mallet, soft or clicky. Meanwhile the two specifications that actually decide whether the ball starts on your intended line, length and lie, are usually whatever the rack happened to have. A putter that is too long forces your eyes inside the line and the toe off the ground, and from there aim becomes guesswork.

Length sets your posture, and posture sets your aim
Standard putters are 34 or 35 inches, and a great many golfers fit better at 32 to 33.5. A putter that is too long pushes your hands away from your body, raises your eyes above and inside the target line, and encourages you to grip down and hold the shaft off-plane. The visible symptom is aiming left of target for a right-handed golfer without knowing it.
Lie angle: sole flat or nothing else works
If the toe of the putter sits up at address, the effective face aim points left; heel up points right. Unlike irons, putter lie has almost no shaft droop to complicate things — the sole either sits flat at your address position or it does not. Fixing lie is a small bend and it removes a persistent aim bias.
Length and lie interact: shortening a putter without adjusting lie usually leaves the toe high. They are fitted together on the bench, then confirmed with the golfer in their real posture.
Shaft lean, loft and roll
- Putters have loft — typically 2 to 4 degrees — to lift the ball out of its resting depression on the green
- Forward shaft lean at impact reduces effective loft; a strong forward press can zero it out entirely
- Too little effective loft drives the ball down into the green and produces a hop before it rolls
- Too much loft launches the ball and it lands, skids, then rolls — distance control suffers
This is why loft is fitted to your delivery, not to a default. Players with a lot of forward press need more static loft; players who rock the shaft back through impact need less.

Grip size and counterbalance
Putter grip size does the opposite job to a full-swing grip: it quiets the hands. Larger grips reduce wrist action, which helps golfers who flip or who feel nervy on short putts. They also add weight behind the balance point, which lightens the head feel — so a jumbo grip often pairs with added head weight or a counterbalanced build to keep the putter feeling stable.
Counterbalancing — adding weight in the butt end, sometimes with a longer shaft gripped down — increases stability and slows tempo for some players. Like everything else here, it should be tested with weight added temporarily before it gets built in.
A fitting sequence that works
- Set your natural posture with your own putter and record eye position over the line
- Fit length until the hands hang comfortably and the eyes sit over or just inside the ball
- Bend lie so the sole sits flat in that posture
- Check aim with an alignment station — most golfers are surprised where they actually aim
- Fit loft to your shaft lean, measured on real strokes
- Confirm balance and grip size against your stroke path, then record everything
None of this requires a new putter. Most of it is bench work on the putter you already trust — which is usually the better outcome anyway.
