Off-Season Club Storage & Maintenance Checklist
Golf clubs are precision instruments, and the off-season is where they quietly deteriorate — not from play, but from neglect and bad storage. A trunk that swings from freezing to baking, a damp garage, or grass and moisture left on the heads will all cost you when you pull the bag back out. A little care now saves money and performance later.

1. Clean everything before it goes away
Dirt and moisture left in the grooves and on the hosel are what start rust. Wash each head with warm water and a soft brush, clean the grooves out, and dry the clubs completely — including down into the ferrule area where water hides. Wipe the shafts and let everything air-dry before it goes in the bag.
2. Give grips a proper wash
A season of skin oil and sunscreen leaves a film that hardens over winter. Scrub grips with warm soapy water and a brush, rinse, and dry them fully. Clean grips regain a surprising amount of tack, and washing them before storage stops the surface from glazing over during the months off.
3. Store somewhere climate-stable
The ideal spot is a temperature-stable, low-humidity indoor space — a closet or conditioned room rather than an unheated garage or shed. If humidity is a concern (and in the Lowcountry it usually is), a couple of desiccant packs in the bag help keep moisture off the heads.
4. Store the bag upright and unloaded
- Stand the bag upright or hang it so weight isn't resting on the shafts.
- Empty the pockets of anything perishable — old snacks, a half-full water bottle, or a damp towel will ruin more than the season.
- Take rain gloves and leather goods out to dry separately so they don't mildew.
- Loosen adjustable driver and hybrid settings slightly so the sleeve isn't under constant tension.
5. Book the pre-season tune-up
The off-season is the best time for anything the shop needs to do — regripping, a loft-and-lie check, a reshaft, or a full-bag audit — because you're not missing rounds while it's on the bench. Come spring, you pull out a bag that's clean, correctly spec'd, and ready, instead of discovering a cracked grip on the first tee.
