How to Read a Loft & Lie Spec Sheet Without Getting Lost
Every audit, bend, or build ends with a spec sheet. It looks like a spreadsheet from a machine shop, and most golfers file it away without ever reading it. That's a shame, because the sheet tells you exactly why your 8-iron goes left and your gap wedge goes nowhere.

The columns you'll see

Read the progression, not the individual rows
A single number in isolation means very little. What matters is whether the set steps evenly. Loft should climb in consistent increments, length should shorten in consistent increments, and swingweight should stay flat or drift by no more than a point or two across the irons.
- Loft gaps: 4 degrees between long irons and 4 to 5 through the scoring clubs is typical. A 2-degree gap means two clubs fly the same distance.
- Length steps: 0.5 inch per club in most modern sets. A club that is 0.25 inch off breaks the strike pattern.
- Lie: within about 1 degree of the intended spec across the set. A single outlier is the classic cause of one club that pulls.
- Swingweight: D0 to D3 depending on preference, but consistency across the set matters more than the letter.

What can and can't be changed
- Bendable: loft and lie on most forged and many cast carbon-steel irons and wedges, within a few degrees.
- Limited: cast stainless heads tolerate less bending, and cavity geometry sets the ceiling.
- Not bendable: titanium and most multi-material woods — adjust those through adapters and weights instead.
- Adjustable another way: length by trimming or reshafting, swingweight by tip weights, grip weight, or head weight.
Keep every spec sheet you receive. Comparing this year's numbers against last year's shows how bending, wear, and turf interaction have moved your set, and it makes the decision to repair rather than replace an easy one to defend.
Frequently asked questions
- What does 2 degrees upright actually do to my shot?
- On a well-struck iron shot it closes the effective face at impact, which typically moves the ball a few yards left for a right-handed golfer and lowers launch slightly. Miss patterns get worse as the club gets shorter.
- Is a 1-degree difference worth fixing?
- Usually not on its own. One degree sits inside normal factory tolerance and is hard to see in ball flight. It becomes worth fixing when it stacks with a length or loft deviation in the same club.
- Can any iron be bent?
- Most forged and cast carbon-steel irons and wedges bend reliably. Cast stainless has less range, and titanium or multi-material woods should not be bent at all.
- Should I keep old spec sheets?
- Yes. A dated baseline lets you see what has drifted over seasons and prevents paying to re-measure ground you already covered.
